Introduction to vitamin D – bare minimum to know

Posted on April 1, 2022 by Natalie

There are a lot of vitamins that we consume and need. Almost all of them we can get with food, regular and balanced diet. Almost!

The vitamin D we can’t. It is not in a food or product or any animal, fruit, vegetable, berry, plant. It is produced in our body by the help of sun. Or by specified sun rays. The problem is that not everywhere on our planet we get these specific sun rays. So, a big part of population has vitamin D deficiency.

Vitamin D is the only one which we have to take as a supplement. So, if you live in a northern country, or in a very south (not like in equator) than most likely you have a vitamin D deficiency if you are not taking it as supplement already.

How much should you take?

Well, it depends on your vitamin D level in blood, age, your current residence, and many other factors. In Europe standard daily dose is 2000-4000 IU.

Why should you take it?

As said above it is not found in food but is necessary for our body. Not all functions of vitamin D are yet known and are still in research. It takes part in our immune system, helps to absorb calcium from food we take, strengthen our bones, nails, and hair.

When should you take it?

It does not matter when you take it – in the morning, midday, or evening. Most important is to take it after or during meal or it may not absorb.

How long should you take it?

Well, again it depends on many factors. If you live in a place with small amount of sun, then most likely you have to take it daily all year round.

Stay healthy! Take your daily dose of vitamin D! Enjoy life!
